Frequently Asked Questions
In
1993 Parliament passed Osteopathy as a
medically recognised alternative therapy.
Osteopathy emphasises on the structural and
functional integration of the body.
Osteopaths specialise in the
Neuromuskuloskeletal systems recognising and
diagnosing abnormalities and pathological
diseases. Through the use of manipulation of
soft tissue and bone articulating techniques
osteopaths are able to gently alter the
state of the tissues retuning them to a
healthy state.
We
can treat a wide variety of problems in both
the young and the old. We commonly see back
and shoulder/neck conditions, but we are
trained to help with conditions such as
Colic, Migraines, Irritable bowel syndrome
and M.E. to name but a few. We also deal
with more structural problems such as Disc
injuries, Whiplash and Hip conditions.
Please click on the 'Treatments' for a
comprehensive list of conditions. If you are
unsure if we can help with your condition
please give us a call on 01582 575 045 for
further information.
We
look for the cause and the reason why an
injury was allowed to occur in the first
place. By treating the cause as well as the
after affect we are able to give a long-term
beneficial cure without the use of drugs. We
also educate our patients in preventative
methods such as stretching and how to
exercise properly. ''PREVENSION IS THE
KEY''.
A
Chiropractor deals mainly with the spine
using high velocity thrusts to manipulate
the vertebrae individually. Osteopaths treat
the spine as well as all the extremities,
using stretch techniques, massage, and joint
manipulation.
Osteopaths also have an excellent record
with pre and post surgical conditions.
Osteopaths constantly refer patients to
their doctors if we feel the underlying
problem requires further investigation such
as blood tests or x-rays.
Osteopathic treatment varies for every
patient. The actual techniques are put
together in the order and intensity that is
considered appropriate by the practitioner.
Techniques such as soft tissue massage may
relax or stimulate muscles. Articulation is
a passive movement, which involves gentle
stretching of the tissue to improve joint
mobility. Manual traction / stretching may
also be used.
Osteopathic manipulation is a small precise
movement applied to a joint. This often
causes a 'click' or 'popping' sound as the
joint surfaces are separated slightly. This
response allows for a reduction of local
muscle spasms and increases the range of
movement within the joint. It also results
in improving circulation and drainage to the
surrounding area.
Osteopathic treatment is seldom painful and
should always be gentle. Patients generally
find treatment pleasant.
